In this modern era of utterly astounding performance, there have never been more choices for track-ready cars. While most track day cars have the engineering to back up their promises, this Camaro ZL1 1LE takes pit lane cred to a new extreme.

The Camaro ZL1 is already a formidable car, but after massaging the suspension, tires, and aero with the best of the best, and pulling some weight out of the car, the 1LE is the new track day alpha pony car.

A number of manufacturers are playing the track day car game, from Porsche’s GT4 and GT3 cars to the kill-all-comers Dodge Viper ACR, but few are as sorted as this Camaro. According to GM, the 1LE is three seconds faster around their three mile Milford test circuit than the regular Zl1. On any typical road course, three seconds is a lifetime.

The 1LE is powered by the ZL1’s 650-horsepower LT4 V8 with a six-speed manual transmission, and stopped by the standard car’s extra-large-pizza-pie-sized Brembo brakes. To give the 1LE some extra stick, GM engineers started with specifying Goodyear’s latest Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires that are both massively wide and stick to the road like plaid does to a hipster. They’re fitted to lighter, forged wheels, improving critical unsprung weight.

Speaking of which, suspension specialists Multimatic have supplied their lightweight DSSV spool-valve dampers, using technology derived directly from their racing dampers. Multimatic supplies a number of top teams around the world with their DSSV dampers, including some in Formula 1. The front suspension is ride height adjustable and the rear can be tweaked with three sway bar positions.

Aero changes are all about adding downforce, and the front dive planes and rear wing aren’t tacked on for faux-tuner looks. No, they’re the real thing.

Including the lighter wheels, engineers managed to pull a total of 27 kilos out of the car over the standard ZL1.

Don’t forget that the regular Zl1 posted a sub-7m 30s lap around the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife and undoubtedly the 1LE will eclipse that by a significant margin.
