For 2017, Honda is delivering a proper Civic Type R for the first time in Canada and it sounds like a formidable performer.
Based on the all-new Civic, which has a superb chassis based on our tests of the sedan, coupe and hatchback, on which this Type R is built, this new hot hatch from Honda has all of the ingredients necessary to become the new standard in the segment.
Unlike lesser Civics, the Type R gets a 2.0-litre, turbocharged four cylinder engine that makes its peak 306 horsepower at 6,500 RPM, while turbocharging helps with a wall of torque. This thing makes 295 pounds of it from 2,500 through 4,500 RPM. Amazing.
Power goes through a six-speed manual transmission with a lower final drive ratio. Yes, it’s front wheel drive, and with a proper limited slip differential as standard equipment (Ford and VW, you’re on notice) and some trick suspension geometry, handling promises to be superb. Adaptive dampers, twenty inch wheels, and Brembo brakes are also fitted from the factory.
The Type R hits showrooms this summer and is priced in the low $40,000 range. The 2017 Honda Civic Type R looks to be one of the most anticipated enthusiast cars this year and if you’re thinking about one, don’t wait to place your order.
