Jaguar has announced its intention to produce the company’s first full electric automobile and has revealed the I-Pace concept crossover. Recently, the brand’s participation in the Formula E championship seemed a little unusual, but with the I-Pace it’s all starting to make sense.
As premium automakers are moving towards full electrics, the I-Pace fits the bill perfectly as an attractive, do-almost-everything sport utility. With the brand’s storied sports car and motor racing history, performance and looks go hand in hand. The I-Pace has all-wheel-drive via two electric motors and is said to post some asphalt-blistering acceleration. With a combined 400 horsepower and 516 pounds of torque, the five-seat Jag is said to hit zero to 100 km/h in about four seconds.
The company says the I-Pace has an EPA range of 350 km (220 miles), which makes it very usable on a daily basis, but with numbers a little shy of Tesla’s Model X crossover.
According to Jaguar, the I-Pace is more than just a concept and intended for 2018 model year production. While Tesla has a near two-year lead in this segment, this Jaguar is stunning and a properly attractive alternative to the appliance-like design of the Model X. Early adopters of electrics will undoubtedly welcome a truly fashionable crossover like this I-Pace.
Jaguar has yet to announce pricing, but expect a premium price to go along with its sportscar-like performance and exquisite lines.
