We received an unusual note from Mercedes-Benz that contained these images of a tweaked AMG GT and a cryptic bit of copy. What it ultimately means, we suppose, is that there will soon be a faster GT available to fans of AMG.
The GT S is already a formidable – and unforgettable – grand tourer, but the prospect of a GT with even more power than the GT S, as well as a retuned, buttoned down suspension and the addition of functional aero, should make the other German automakers nervous, especially Porsche.
When we tested the GT S last year, we thought it was an interesting alternative to the 911 Carrera GTS, but a faster AMG GT could a very compelling option for those considering the purchase of the venerable 911 Turbo. That 4.0-litre twin turbocharged engine is one of the best sounding motors available today and it lends a real demonic character to the AMG.
According to the images, this factory-tuned GT has been tested on road as well as the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, and is likely to beat the GT S’ 7:30 lap time. Whether you put any stock into ‘ring lap times is another issue altogether (we don’t).
No word on a name yet, but we’re pretty sure it won’t be GT3. You see, Porsche threw its weight around, intimidating Aston Martin into changing the name of their Vantage GT3 to Vantage GT12, despite that GT3 is a globally-recognized racing category. Would they do the same to their crosstown rival? We’d bet our lederhosen they would.
Mercedes-Benz has indicated this new GT will have its world debut on June 24. Stay tuned, as they say.
