On November 13, 2015, the dark, dank automotive corner of the Internet was aflutter with talk of another Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record, this time by the out-of-production (or perhaps still in production) Pagani Zonda Revolucion.

Paganis are gorgeous machines with the attention to detail of a mad scientist on Adderall. No, Horacio Pagani isn’t that guy, but he is one of the geniuses of the modern hypercar era. The Revolucion is a formidable car, too, carrying just over 1,000 kilos, 800 horsepower, and advanced aero with DRS. That sounds like something I’d like to take for a spin.

Let’s get back to this lap record business. It all seems to have started with an Instagram post from Pagani owner and enthusiast Kris Singh. The Zonda Revolucion depicted in the image carries some vinyl on its nose indicating a six minute and thirty second lap of the Nordschleife:

From there, the automotive buff books picked it up – here are Road & Track‘s and Motor Trend‘s posts – however, it seems that brains fell out of heads at the buff books’ offices. They seem to have have conveniently forgotten one important fact: Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record attempts have been banned since March 2015 following a tragic racing incident. As well, speed limits have been enforced at the famous circuit for most of the year.

The question is, of course, how and when did someone set a record lap in a Revolucion? With all of the eyes and ears around the Nordschleife – and never mind the lap record ban and speed limits – how is such a thing possible? It’s inconceivable that such an attempt would go unnoticed because there are countless cameras pointed at the Nordschleife every single day. Furthermore, Pagani Automobili hasn’t made any claims about the lap record by way of social media or otherwise.

That said, the evidence seems to point to this being a simple hoax and a great way for hypercar enthusiasts to engage in conversations about Nürburgring, which is, I suppose, what we’re doing here.

Regarding Nordschleife lap records, you must keep in mind that they are all unverified, with no sanctioning body providing the necessary third party validation of a claimed lap time. Combined with weather considerations, there is not enough efficacy in the process for any Nordschleife lap record to be valid, so they’re pretty much meaningless except as marketing fodder. But we’ll save that story for another day.
